Dining Etiquette Guide

The below are tips and should not be accepted as any absolutes. Using your own judgment and following the lead of your superiors is always the safest bet.

Introductions:
     • Stand when
          - Elder or Senior enters room
          - Customer or client enters room
     • Introduce yourself to individuals on either side of you at the table

Conversations:
     • Appropriate Topics
          - The company
          - The position you are interviewing for
          - Words to use: who, what, where, when, why
     • Inappropriate Topics
          - Politics, religion, personal and controversial topics

Napkins:
     • Place napkin on lap after everyone at your table has been seated
     • When leaving the table place napkin on seat
     • When meal is complete, place napkin on table to the right side of your plate

Ordering:
     • Do not order the most expensive item on the menu
     • Do not order more than two courses
     • Do not order wine or any alcoholic beverages
     • Do not order difficult or messy to eat food

Dining:
     • Wait to eat until all individuals have been served unless invited to eat
     • Eat at the pace of others at your table
     • Sit on the first 3/4 of your chair.
     • Do not bend over your plate to meet your utensil
     • Pass salad dressing to the right with the handle pointing toward the recipient
     • Spilled food is to be picked up with a piece of your silverware and placed on the side of your plate

Final Thoughts:
     • Send a Thank You note to the host if you were a guest. This is a great way to start a business relationship or follow-up on any business discussed
